Who We Are
The Louisa Extension Master Gardener program is a volunteer program affiliated with Virginia Tech and the Louisa County Extension Service. There are Master Gardener programs located in all 50 states and four Canadian provinces with approximately 95,000 active Master Gardeners who provide an estimated 5,000,000 volunteer service hours per year to their communities.
Individuals or couples interested in gardening and volunteering to share their skills take a course that includes classroom lectures, hands-on demonstrations and field trips on a wide variety of topics. You’ll find Master Gardeners volunteering at the Mineral Farmers Market, our Backyard Gardening Seminars at the Louisa County Library, the Garden Expo with Seed Share, the Louisa County Agricultural Fair, the Virginia State Fair, area schools and countless other activities.

A Tribute To Jim Scharf
Jim Scharf, Past President of the Louisa Extension Master Gardeners, suddenly passed away on May 4, 2011.
Jim will always be remembered by his many Master Gardener friends as one of those happy people who made everyone around him feel good. For seven years, including his four years as President, he seemed to be a part of every Master Gardener project. This became especially clear at one meeting when practically every project chairman began their report with, "I'm not sure, Jim was doing that." His horticultural knowledge, and the fact that he seemed to know everyone in Virginia, made him the 'go-to' person for all of us. Most importantly though, we lost a very good friend. Jim will be sorely missed, and certainly not forgotten.
